538 is fine.
With great site prep and high quality seedlings you could go lower but I wouldn't go below 400/acre.

Re: Mudplantain and duck potato
What about creeping burhead as food source for ducks? {Echinodorus cordifolius (L.) Griseb. }
Similar to duck potato. We have huge areas of it but never seems to be used by ducks very much. What are your experiences?

Re: New shells anyone?
I conducted an unitentional and unscientific experiment this year. Hunted with a bunch of folks last season and because I don't mind cleaning everyone's ducks and actually like duck, I get to take most everyone's duck meat. The folks I hunted with shot a variety of shells - hevishot, Kent, Remington...

Re: 55 gallon metal drums
Try Luvell Dairy. They'll let you have some for next to nothing. Its also interesting to see what chemicals go into milk that are delivered in 55 gallon drums.
They have a couple of locations in the state I believe.

I've been looking for a 28" barrel for mine without luck. I'll definitely be interested if you find a source.

Re: ID these acorns
A hybrid cross makes a lot of sense too. Never know they could cross? Looks like we would have hybrids all over the Delta if nuttall and water oak could cross and I guess we may have??? Red oak species do hybridize fairly often. Not that its common, but enough that its not extremely unusual. White ...

Re: ID these acorns
Here's another option.
Dr. Evans, dendrology instructor, said it could very well be a nuttall X water oak hybrid as the acorns show distinct features of both. Given the location and the fact that leaves don't appear to be leathery, he ruled out blackjack.

Re: ID these acorns
Water oak. The second, larger leaf is a shade leaf or juvenile leaf.
Leaf morphology in water oak is variable, particularly in younger trees.
Definitely not a blackjack.
