Who likes a good timber hunt? I know if you are here reading this article you like it or dream about doing it one day! There is nothing more exciting than groups of mallards or gadwalls working through a tight hole in the trees on a blue sky sunny day. There is a time and place for every call. Timber hunting is the most aggressive form of duck hunting because of the kicking water to create movement and the entire groups duck calling technique. If you have watched any timber hunts on TV or YouTube, the call sound used most by hunters is the comeback.

The comeback call is a very aggressive sound. It almost sounds like a greeting call but faster and louder. When you blow this call, you are not asking the ducks to come back. You are commanding them to come back. Keep that in your mind as you blow it. I always try to watch the lead duck when blowing the comeback. I am blowing to him. I am watching his actions. The moment he looks to be going away, I and the group hit him with the comeback! What if they keep going away? Pour it to them even more!

How To Blow A Comeback Call:  The comeback call is a hard and fast series of 5 to 7 quacks that starts fast and slows as you progress “down the cadence”. To blow the comeback call you say “QUIIT-QUIIT-QUIIT-QUIIT-Quit-Quit-quit.” Listen to the following:

Comeback Call #1

Comeback Call #2

I would love to hear you guys practicing this call, email your sound files to Rocky@DuckSouth.com and I will try to coach you up on it!
