What was the one thing throughout your schooling that ALWAYS caused you trouble? If I had to pick one, it would have been proving theorems in Geometry. I am not trying to brag, but in certain subjects I was a whiz! I could have done a lot more with my grades though, but school bored me. I was the guy sitting by the window dreaming about duck hunting…..Anyway, beginner callers feel this way about learning how to blow the feed call.

I want you to imagine you are creeping up to a flooded corn field full of ducks, mallard ducks. Instead of jump shooting them, you sit and listen. What do you hear? You hear quacks, greeting calls, and multiple feeding duck sounds. What is the feeding duck sound? It is the sound of contentment made by mallard hens while feeding and telling others “hey, everything down here is OK and tastes great!”

How do you blow the feed call? It is made by pushing air through your call and saying the words da-dit, da-dit, da-dit or to sound like multiple ducks say the words tica-tica very fast. Now, slamming your tongue to the back of the front teeth is crucial! Remember how you blew the quack? I want you to use the same amount of air from your diaphragm to make this sound as you made your quack sound and open your hand all the way at the end of your call. Push air through the call and use the words tica-tica or da-dit. How did it sound?

If it sounded good, let’s make it sound like a field full of ducks! I want you to make your da-dit, da-dit, da-dit, da-dit, da-dit, da-dit, and throw in a greeting call because these are sounds of that corn field full of ducks you didn’t jump shoot earlier!
