How To Build a Temporary Duck Blind

Two keys to success in duck hunting are:

  1. To be where the ducks want to go. Watch where they’re working and go to them.
  2. Once you get there, you have to totally conceal yourself.

You can’t be help hazard about hiding, they’ll see you. Build a good portable duck blind if a blind is not available. I always like to keep net, cable, plastic zip ties, and a small hatchet or saw. When no blind is present, add 15 minutes to your arrival time to the duck hole. I’m going to show you how a good blind can be built do with very little effort.

  1. The first thing I’m going to do is drive a couple of poles in the ground. Put one at 2 o’ clock and one at 10 o’ clock. Put a cross piece on the two poles and zip tie on. Then, run a connector to the back and wrap some net around to form the shell of the blind.
  2. Once you get the corner poles in, you just run a cross pole from one side to the other. Then, tie the cross piece down with zip ties. Once that is done, go ahead and frame out the blind with poles going back past your shoulders. Then add brush around blind and in front of netting. I would use natural vegetation in and from the area which you are hunting. Place around the whole blind, but not to high that it would block shooting.
  3. 15 minutes is all it took from start to finish. Again, I took a net around a couple of poles placed up and down. I place a cross member going from side to side across the top of the side poles. I took some cable ties and tied the netting to those poles.  Then, I took natural vegetation from the area and placed it around the blind.

Being able to go where the ducks are working gives you a huge advantage over other hunters.  You go where the waterfowl want to be and then you build a little temporary blind. Try to blend it into the natural surroundings, and if you do, you’re going to be a successful duck hunter.
