Saltwater and Freshwater Fish report March 8

The SWC Sportsman’s lodge in Venice is reporting that they have done well with redfish in the last few days. The speckled trout are still on the outside but it has been too rough to get to them with the high wind conditions. Offshore fishing has also been limited due to the winds however the weekend is shaping up to be great for any fishing you want to do.

Daniel Kubecka-Run N Gun Adventures: Southwest Texas Coast

Weather hasn’t been great but the fish don’t mind. Daniel and Nick have pushed through the rough weather and absolutely hammered the speckled trout. They are seeing several every day in the 7-8 pound danielkubeckarange with some over 8 pounds. Under cork with shrimp is still the key to landing specks in the Matagorda area.

Blake Hall happily reported that the bass on Lake Guntersville are still biting strong! The pre spawn areas continue to be the key and Blake and clients have been putting extremely high quality fish in the boat every day. Blake’s go to rig has been variations of swimbaits, traps, chatterbaits, Bama rigs, and crank baits.

Blake also said that the bass on Pickwick have been phenomenal.  He has caught the majority of largemouth mid lake of hydrilla flats and stump rows.  1-5 feet lipless crankbaits and spinner baits have put some giants in the boat this week for Blake. The smallmouth have mostly been on the upper end of the lake along rock rows and bluffs. Swim baits, jerk baits and 5-15 crank baits have been the key to putting huge smallies in the boat.

The crappie fishing on Pickwick continues to be good but the up and down weather pattern kept the fish a little messed up over the weekend. The weather looks about the same for the coming weekend so I would look for the fishing to be good in the same areas and using same techniques as last week. Boat Docks and shallow brush piles are where most of the limits of fish have been caught. Also many of the fish being caught are beginning to be females which is a sign that the big ladies are moving in!

Justin Fayard of Mexican Gulf Charters in Venice, La says FINALLY!  The weekend is looking like it’s going to be a good one! The tuna bite has been phenomenal of late and the wahoo have been snapping as well. Going to make a few day drops for the swordfish and look forward to hooking into some of them as well.

Grenada Lake is beginning to see the usual spring weather of this time of year. The water will be constantly rising and falling due to rain and management trying to keep water at appropriate level. Fishing has been good the last week with the bulk of fish being caught trolling on roadrunners. It doesn’t seem that the spawn has started although some big females are beginning to be caught in shallow water of 3 feet or less around stumps and trees.  The same can be said for Lake Washington. Road runners in 6-12 feet of water continues to be the key.

My forecast for the weekend looks “ok.” There is some rain forecast for most of the region and slightly cooler temps but the fishing should remain consistent although finding big numbers of crappie may be tough. Bass could also be a little sluggish but with the spawn in sight they should be active if you can find them. Venice and the gulf continues to produce and if you’re wanting to fill the cooler and have slightly warmer weather I would head south!
