Happy Halloween from Ducksouth. I hope you and your little ones have a great night of trick or treating. Now that football is over (not literally) in the state of Mississippi, we can focus on the most important thing, duck season.

There may be a few remaining games on the schedule, but who gives a crap! Ole Miss and MS State both suck and neither should. If you were to put the front seven of MSU anywhere else in the conference, whoa! Why it doesn’t work at State, I don’t know. Ole Miss with one of the best pass offenses in the SEC and can’t stop grandma coming through on a walker on defense. I say we combine the two! Works for me, I like both and would have a great time before the game in the tailgate area visiting with friends from both.

It is freaking dry and hot. It has been the warmest October that I remember. I remember it being this dry in recent years. I hope this is not foreshadowing of what’s coming this duck season. Even though it is hot and dry, I am getting reports from members of the Duck South Guides Roundtable (more on that in a minute) of birds beginning to migrate South. The length of a day telling most ducks to go south or photo migration is not changing even with the heat or dry weather.  The problem in a dry year is that most farmers have their ground hipped up and no food is left in the fields. Around me, it looks like spring right before planting. Here is a video from Texas and a picture of some birds around Stuttgart.

I have good news on the Ducksouth App. The new features should be 99% complete today. I told you in the spring we would try and provide one of the most detailed apps for duck hunters and I think we have come close.

  • The hunting journal feature is in place. I recommend that every hunter keep records. This journal will let you do just that with locations, picture and video uploads, etc. This thing is loaded.
  • The Blind map will let you put all you blinds in one place and see the weather pertaining to those blinds at that moment.
  • Guides Roundtable will let you know where most of the migration is at that moment. It is a more detailed and accurate version of the ducks unlimited migration map from credible people. Guides from North Dakota all the way down to Texas and across to Mississippi and back up to Michigan will tell you accurate numbers and give you a forecast of what’s coming over the next couple of days from their experience. You can listen to audio from your favorite regions on the flyaway and also see photos and video.
  • Ducksouth Social- Are you tired of forums? They aren’t going anywhere, but if you want to talk to members, share photos and video, and communicate quickly, the new social media software is where it. I hope to be adding a live feature very soon.
  • Home Page- You probably have seen the new home page. We have a couple more things to tweak, but it has come a long way from 2002.
  • Other Features- Check them all out. There are still a few minor changes coming, but the engine is in place to hopefully make you a better duck hunter. Please make sure to report any bugs you may find. I would like to get those fixed as quick as possible.

I hope you guys are brushing blinds and putting boards in. One thing Josh, Hannah and I will be doing this winter is being in the field with you. We want to write about your hunts and your experiences. We won’t be there to publish or talk about your hunting spot or shoot your ducks, but this site was built with the focus on YOU. We want to shine the spotlight on YOU. We want to share that experience with others on the site.

I hope you guys are enjoying the newsletter being sent out in email. Since we are getting into hunting season, we are going to go to twice a week on emails. One will be the same newsletter you have been getting. The other will be an email with all the hot topics on the board each week. The other reason this site was started was to help and communicate with others. We hope the new email will do just that.
