Sitting almost dead in the middle of Itta Bena and Belzoni, MS on Highway 7 is the once prospering town of Morgan City. At one time, Morgan City was the largest city in Leflore County. Its proximity to the constant Yazoo River barge traffic and a railroad kept visitors passing through the town. Morgan City these days is so small, that if you blink while passing through, you may miss it.

There is always one place or thing that holds a community together, though. Morgan City’s place is Morgan City Grocery or Bo’s as the locals call it. It is more of a country store than a convenience store. A shopper could buy nuts and bolts, plumbing supplies, all the way to fresh bread. The one for sure thing you will find at Bo’s like most community stores is the gathering of locals at the table in the center of the room. During the winter, it is a table full of camo.

img_2165Duck hunters have called Bo’s one of their favorite hangouts since Matthews Brake opened in the early eighties. Matthews Brake is only a few miles down the road and one of the hottest spots to hunt in the state of Mississippi, but out of the way a little. What would make duck hunters drive out of their way to go to Morgan City Grocery?

There is one thing! It is the cheeseburger at Bo’s. For years, I have asked Bo, Mrs. Carolyn (Bo’s wife), and Ms. Bee (Morgan City Grocery Chef) what made their cheeseburgers so good. I have always gotten the same answer. They  don’t know. It could be the meat they use, which is high quality and an extra large patty. It could be the seasoning. It could be something Ms. Bee does to all of the burgers. Ms. Bee is not telling!

I urge you, if you get close this winter to Morgan City Grocery, pull in and ask for a cheeseburger. Go all out and ask for the double cheeseburger. You will not regret it!
