Another Low Cost Way To Kill More Ducks in a Flooded Field

In my first few years of guiding, there was a lot to be learned about blind placement, hiding hunters correctly, and just overall hunting ducks. In any successful venture in life, the way to success is to fail. Yes, you heard that right. In anything in life, You have to fail many times before “True Success” can be attained. That is a whole other subject in itself. So, Back to the duck hunting!

When I first set out as a guide, I didn’t hunt ducks like I would, if I were hunting by myself. You can’t! Most paying clients won’t leave their comfort zone, even it means killing more ducks. Most want to sit in a big comfortable sled blind sticking out in the middle of a field or a boat when they could be hiding next to a tree in the flooded timber. I learned very quickly to explain the situations to hunters the night before and let them decide if they wanted to kill ducks or be comfortable. Most chose to kill ducks and a few chose comfort. I understood both choices.

The next low-cost method to killing more ducks is one I had to go to many years ago when field hunting. One thing that happens to every field hunter in their career is ducks landing away from the blind on the shallow side of the field. You can’t move the pit blind! You can’t move the skid blind because it will really stick out! I couldn’t afford coffin blinds! Layouts weren’t an option in the mud! How do you get to the shallow side of the field to hide and hunt successfully?

In this day and age, you would probably buy a layout boat or sled that a layout blind would fit in and go to town. What if you can’t afford layout boats or sleds? Here is what you can do. You will need three pallets per 2 hunters and a layout blind per hunter:

pallet

Go to a local retail store or co-op that receives shipments on pallets. Ask if you could buy one or a couple(depending on how many people are hunting in the party). Most stores will be happy to give them to you.

layout

Any layout blind will work like this will work.

Arrive at the duck hole a few minutes early the morning of with your pallets. Place in 2-4 inches of shallow water. Make sure the water is not coming above the top layers of the pallet. Place you layout blinds on top of the pallets. Cover the pallets and layout blinds with any nearby cover such as soybean leftovers, rice stubble, or any weeds that may be near. The early flight of ducks will not pay any attention to the low profile blinds you have built. I hope this tip helps you kill more ducks without spending a boatload of money.
