To hear the story of how Slater’s jigs got its start is quiet humble and honestly pretty comical. A hard working southern gentleman simply wanted to make his own crappie jigs and try them out one day at a lake he often fished. The fishing reports from other boats on the lake were pretty grim but he paid it no attention. Mr. Slater just wanted to put his hook in the water. And, to put the events of the day in short form, Mr. Slater ended up going home with jig orders to fill because fishermen on the lake wanted to know his secret! 50 years later his secret can be found in stores and tackle boxes across the southeast.

In the coming years technology changed the way a lot fisherman approached catching crappie, however the jigs made by Slater continued to be a mainstay in the tackle boxes of fishermen.  Jimmy Slater recalls of the material his father used in the original jigs and credits it to the success of the company. “It allows the jig to be much more lifelike” says Slater. And that life like movement has filled more live wells eddieslaterwith crappie than I care to count.

For a long time Slater’s jigs were mostly found in the south however in recent years they have expanded their reach significantly. “We are seeing an increase in sales with ice fishermen up north.” This comes as a true blessing as it allows them to continue their sales throughout the year and also helps them focus on expanding into other markets such as inshore fishing along the gulf.

To be honest, it doesn’t matter what you are catching when using a jig made by the Slater family. You can fish with the confidence of knowing that each jig is American made by honest, God fearing people who simply love to fish!
